Caboose move

In late October, 2006, well in advance of the move, we tried to stabilize the condition of the caboose by tarping it off in advance of the harsh winter on the side of Mt. Shasta.

Both the cupola roof and main cabin roof were severely damaged so we made a temporary roof out of plywood and tarps.

In Spring, 2007 we began preparations for the actual move. Before bringing in the crane, a pad alongside the caboose had to be made. In order to have high enough clearance for the move, many trees also had to be limbed along the forest service road heading down to Highway 89.

After its trip down Highway 89 and up I-5 to South Weed, X746 arrives at the Black Butte compound.

Carlton's big crane is placed for the unloading move.

After first placing the trucks on our newly constructed rails, the crane lifts the caboose body off the flat bed truck.

The caboose body is set on the trucks, held in place just by small iron pins.

Looking a little wobbly, the caboose is in place at its new home at Black Butte.
